Delta is located in the southwestern corner of Delta County, the highest concentration of residents in the county. Named for its location of the delta where the Uncompahgre River flows into the Gunnison. The first trading post on the Western Slope was located in the Delta area in the mid 1820's.
Fort Uncompahgre was a trading post on the North Branch of the Old Spanish Trail. This part of the "trail" served fur trappers and traders moving trade goods and furs between Santa Fe and Antione Robidoux's other trading post Fort Uinta. With the removal of the Ute Indians in the latter part of the 19th Century, Delta became a transportation center for the booming agriculture in the county. The Rio Grand rail line served to transport North Fork Valley orchard products to market. Delta was incorporated as a "home rule" city in 1882.
