The year was 1881 when William Clark, Samuel Angevine, and Samuel Wade moved up the valley from the Hotchkiss area to home stead the area around the present day town of Paonia, CO. These early settlers provided the ranching foundation for the upper North Fork Valley, later coal was discovered by Ira Q. Sanborn in 1883 in the Somerset area. By the 1890's orchards were producing prize winning fruit, transported to eastern markets by the Denver & Rio Grande Western. These three foundations, ranching, coal mining, and fruit orchards continue to give the upper North Fork Valley a consistent economic base for the future.
