Delta County, Colorado, June 6, 2018—Delta County Libraries offers many educational and entertaining activities and events for you and your family to enjoy. Trustee Talk Time.  Do you like your library?  Do you have suggestions for improvement?  Do you know about the Tax Payers Bill of Rights (TABOR) and the Gallagher Amendment?  Do you understand the effect this legislation has on your support of public institutions? Do you know how the library is funded?  Are you frustrated with your library?  Talk to Trustee Jess Deegan, Delta County Libraries Board of Trustees, Crawford Representative!  Deegan will be available on the second and fourth Wednesdays of every month at Crawford Library from 4:00pm to 5:30pm.  If this time does not work for you, contact Deegan at jdeegan@deltalibraries.org or 970.510.0724 to ask your questions or make an appointment.

This Summer, Libraries Rock!  Delta County Libraries is offering an eight-week summer program beginning the week of June 4 to all Delta County residents.  Musical-themed activities, programs, and prizes available for all ages, at all libraries.  Register the entire family at opening week ice-cream socials scheduled at each library.  Thanks to generous community support, no registration fees apply.  Kids who complete the program receive a free t-shirt!  Register starting Monday, May 21 in-person at your local library or online at www.deltalibraries.org, “Summer Reading.”

Cedaredge

Storytime for Babies, Tots, and Preschoolers at the Cedaredge Library. Thursdays starting at 10:30am. Parents and Tots are invited to participate in a reading time together. Contact the Library at 399-7674 for details

Summer Reading Kick-Off Party.  Join us for a musical ice cream social at Cedaredge Town Park! Bring the entire family to register for the 2018 Summer Reading Program “Libraries Rock!”  Enjoy music and free ice cream. Learn about how to earn a free t-shirt and other prizes, just for reading over the summer! Thursday, June 7 at 2:00pm at Cedaredge Town Park.

Musical Note Scavenger Hunt. Kids are invited to Cedaredge Library to hunt for hidden musical notes to solve the secret message!  June 12 through 23 during library hours.

TIZE Music Maker Space. Teens are invited to Cedaredge Library to tinker around with TIZE – a music-making program for iPads that allows you to create songs in an easy-yet-professional manner. Even cooler is the fact that you can e-mail the song to yourself once you’re done with it!  June 12 through 16 during library hours.

Handmade Instruments with Rick Smith.  Bring the whole family to Cedaredge Town Park for an instrument-making demonstration by Rick Smith.  Participants will learn how to make a banjo with a can and other provided materials.  Stay in the park afterwards for a free concert sponsored by the Cedaredge Area Chamber of Commerce. June StoryWalk®. The June StoryWalk® book on the Surface Creek Trail is The Man with the Violin by Kathy Stinson. Dylan is swept away by the music he hears in the subway station…a man playing a violin.  As crowds of oblivious people hurry past, Dylan wants to stop and listen. Find out how the story goes on the Surface Creek Trail in June.  Then, visit the Cedaredge Library for activities and a take home craft related to the story. Crafts Group. Crafters meet every Tuesday at 10:00am to share ideas and show & tell.

Tech Soup Saturday.  Bring your devices and your questions. Our expert “techies” will do their best to answer your questions.  Every Saturday from 11:00am to 1:00pm.

Genealogy. Who’s Who in Whoville?  Find out who you really are!  The first Friday of every month from 10:30am to 12:00pm.

Crawford

Storytime for Babies, Tots, and Preschoolers at the Crawford Library. Stories, games, songs, activities, and crafts for kids 0-5 and their parents or caretakers. Thursdays starting at 10:30am. Contact the Library at 399-7783 for details.

Banjo Party. Kids are invited to the Crawford Library to learn about and make a homemade banjo!  All supplies provided.  Wednesday, June 13 at 10:30am.

Make a Banjo Maker Space. Teens are invited to the Crawford Library to make a banjo from provided materials at the maker station.  June 14 through 20 during library hours.

Musical Instrument Maker Space. Kids are invited to the Crawford Library to make a handmade instrument out of a variety of items.  All supplies provided.  June 20 through 23 during library hours.

Teen Wii Dance Party. Teens are invited to the Crawford Library to bust a move at a Wii Dance Party!  Bring a friend and be ready to boogie.  Thursday, June 21 at 2:00pm.

Kids Wii Dance Party. Kids are invited to the Crawford Library to bust a move at a Wii Dance Party!  Bring a friend and be ready to boogie.  Wednesday, June 27 at 10:30am.

Scrapbooking. Join friends at Crawford Library and get you pictures and other treasured items in your scrapbook.  The first Monday of every month at 11:00am.

Tech Help. Librarians will be available to help you with questions and problems about computers or mobile devices. Wednesday through Saturday by appointment. Contact the Library at 399-7783 for details.

Delta

Teen Sheet Music Maker Space.  Teens are invited to the Delta Library to create a decorative ball out of sheet music.  All supplies provided.  June 7 through 14 during library hours.

Kids Musical Trivia Scavenger Hunt. Kids are invited to Delta Library to test their musical know-how in a musical trivia scavenger hunt!  Thursday, June 14 at 2:00pm.

Soundtrack of My Life. Teens are invited to the Delta Library to create a CD soundtrack that represents their life.  Teens will use their library card and the library database, Freegal, to download music and create a soundtrack.  All supplies provided.  All participants have a chance to win a prize drawing!  Thursday, June 21 at 2:00pm.

Soundtrack of My Life Maker Space. Did you miss the program? No worries! Teens are invited to the Delta Library to create a CD soundtrack that represents their life.  Bring your library card for free music downloads using Freegal!  All other supplies provided.  June 21 through 28 during library hours.

Musical Instrument Maker Space.  Kids are invited to Delta Library to create an instrument to play and take home!  All supplies provided.  June 21 through 27 during library hours.

Delta Book Club. Join the Delta Book Club!  June’s discussion is Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI by David Grann.  Saturday, June 16 at 1:00pm.

Music at the Library. Patrons are invited to the Delta Library to listen to live music with a local musician in the circulation area.  Monday, June 25 at 5:30pm.

Echolocation and the Science of Sound. Kids are invited to the library for a program on echolocation and the science of sound.  Explore sound experiments and learn how bats and dolphins use echolocation to communicate.  Thursday, June 28 at 2:00pm.

Hotchkiss

Storytime for Babies, Tots, and Preschoolers at the Hotchkiss Library.  Wednesdays starting at 10:30am. Join us for stories, activities, and crafts downstairs in the Hotchkiss Library. Contact the Library at 399-7781 for details.

Musical Word Search Maker Space. Teens are invited to Hotchkiss Library to search for musical words at the teen maker station.  June 6 through 20 during library hours.

Never Play Music Right Next to the Zoo! Kids are invited to the Hotchkiss Library for a read along concert.  Zoo animals take over the bandstand in this musical story!  Tuesday, June 12 at 2:00pm.

Musical Magnet Maker Space. Teens are invited to the Hotchkiss Library to create musical word magnets.  All supplies are provided.  June 13 through 20 during library hours.

Recycled CD Maker Space. Kids are invited to the Hotchkiss Library to get crafty with recycled CDs!  June 18 through 21 during library hours.

Go Bananas with Coding. Teens are invited to Hotchkiss Library to set up, code, and play a piano made of bananas!  Participants can test their knowledge of musical notes and pitches.  All supplies and banana splits provided!  Wednesday, June 20 at 2:00pm.

Hotchkiss Book Club. The June book discussion is “Custer’s Trials: Life on the Frontier in a New America” by T.J.Stiles.  Hotchkiss Book Club will not meet July through September.  See you again in October!

Echolocation and the Science of Sound.  Kids are invited to Hotchkiss Library for a program on echolocation and the science of sound.  We will explore sound experiments and learn how bats and dolphins use echolocation to communicate.  Tuesday, June 26 at 2:00pm.

Color to Music. Adults are invited to Hotchkiss Library to relax, listen to music, and express themselves through coloring.  We will discuss how each song makes us feel different colors.  Wednesday, June 27 at 3:00pm.

Paonia

Storytime for Babies, Tots, and Preschoolers at the Paonia Library. Tuesdays starting at 10:30 am. Contact the Library at 399-7881 for details.

LEGO Rock Star Maker Space. Teens are invited to the Paonia Library to transform an ordinary LEGO character into a LEGO Rock Star!  June 7 through 22 during library hours.

Music in the Amphitheater. Week two of Music in the Amphitheater features Hard Pressed, a local duo that brings original and traditional old-time string band and Americana-folk off the front porch to the library!  Picnic and take out dinners are welcome.  Tuesday, June 12 at 6:30pm.

Drum Circle Fun. Kids are invited to the Paonia Library for a group drum circle! Participants will learn about, participate in, and discuss drum circles.  Thursday, June 14 at 2:00pm.

Musical Instrument Maker Space. Kids are invited to the Paonia Library to create a musical instrument out of a variety of materials.  Tin can drums, handmade maracas and more!  June 14 through 28 during library hours.

Knit Crochet Day. Enjoy the camaraderie of fellow knitters and crocheters; share projects and browse our library of craft books for use or purchase. Always tea and cookies too!  Saturday, June 16 at 12:00pm.

Music in the Amphitheater.  Beth Quist is a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and composer, who began playing piano at age 2. She was lead soprano and instrumentalist for the creation band in Cirque du Soleil’s “KA”.  She has sung & toured with Bobby McFerrin’s Voicestra since 1997.  Beth has composed over 50 scores for dance, theater, television, & film, including musical contributions to the Emmy nominated documentary “The Two Escobars”. Beth is performing at Paonia Library on Tuesday, June 19 at 6:30pm.  Picnic and take out dinners are welcome.

Tech Café.  Paonia Library will have an open Tech Cafe in the Community Room for all ages and skill levels to seek tech assistance.  Every Wednesday from 2:00 to 4:00pm.

Literacy Program

High School Equivalency.  For information on High School Equivalency classes or HiSET® testing, please contact Gail at 399.7670 or gsrebnik@deltalibraries.org.

ESL Classes. An intermediate to advanced ESL class meets at Delta Family Center Mondays through Thursdays from 12:15pm to 3:00pm.  Contact Danielle at dcarre@deltalibraries.org for more information.  A class for all levels meets at Hotchkiss Library Mondays and Thursdays from 6:00pm to 8:00pm.  Contact Ann at astewart@deltalibraries.org for more information.

Distance Learning Program.  Do you need your high school equivalency but are unable to attend classes? Delta County Libraries now has a distance-learning program that offers participants the ability to work from home with an online program to prepare for the test.  Contact Gail at gsrebnik@deltalibraries.org for more information.
