Crawford

When the Ute lands on the Western Slope were opened up for anglo settlement, George A. Crawford was one of the early settlers who bought a large amount of land in the Grand Valley that would later become Grand Junction. Passing through the Smith Fork Valley in Delta County, Crawford realized that this area was a good place to found a town. Crawford was involved with the establishment of Delta and Grand Junction in the 1880's. The town of Crawford was established in 1882, with the post office coming a year later in 1883. Sitting at an elevation of 6,558 feet, and located just north of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Crawford offers excellent views into the North Fork Valley, was well as Grand Mesa to the east.
